It’s amazing what you can find these days when you visit the travel centers that dot America’s highways.  

They have everything you can possibly imagine from the common necessities to things that might not be, like Viking helmets. There are also some food finds along the way that you may not typically find in other parts of the country. 

We polled a few of our friends in the trucking community and asked what they had come across during their stops at travel centers and here is what they had to say.  

“They’ve got some pretty good greeting cards,” said Libby Uselton, who drives team with her husband Johnny, “And one of my favorite items is my RoadPro Lunch Box Stove.”

Ramona Hogue loves anything to do with the American Flag, “I have found some unique items in Red, White and Blue in travel centers along my route.” She also is drawn to “ANYTHING ON SALE” and often finds great deals in travel centers. 

“I bought what was called a pogo stick in the 70’s” said Idella Hansen, “If you would stick it under the dash and on the accelerator, it would idle the truck up, I still have it in my shop at home.”

Henry Albert commented on his 12 Volt Bunk Warmer he bought years ago “That thing saved me from not having to idle my engine to keep warm” said Albert “The money I saved not only paid for my son’s first car, but his first year in college too.”

“The BEST EVER find for me was my wooden back scratcher” said Gary Johnson.  

We also had a few drivers comment on the food and amenities that can be found at certain travel centers. One of the places that stood out was The Pine Cone Travel Plaza in Johnson Creek, WI. According to what we were told they have one of the best bakeries around and are known for their cream puffs and eclairs. They also have a great deli with hot broasted chicken and made to order pizza. And, after you get your fill of baked goods and delicious entrées you can walk off the calories at the factory outlet stores that are nearby. 

Then there is the Quicklee’s Travel Center in New York which includes a café and community space, complete with a fireplace and comfy chairs. The store is designed for those that need a much-needed break, providing a relaxing environment. 

The Tamarack in Beckley West Virginia offers up some unique foods such as fried green tomatoes and rainbow trout, original and handmade items by local artisans, a theater, fine arts gallery and hands on workshops in pottery, culinary arts, woodworking with local artists.
